Learn how the BC Energy Step Code helps create high-performance, energy-efficient buildings across British Columbia. From flexible design to Net-Zero readiness, this guide will walk you through everything.
The BC Energy Step Code is a provincial standard in British Columbia that helps new buildings become more energy-efficient. It sets performance-based targets instead of fixed materials, giving builders flexibility in design.
The code offers multiple “Steps” from basic efficiency to Net-Zero Energy Ready buildings by 2032. Local governments adopt higher steps as needed. Step 3 is now the minimum across BC.
• Stage 1: Pre-permit modeling and compliance report • Stage 2: Mid-construction site visit and blower door test • Stage 3: Final testing and as-built compliance report
Step Code allows performance-based compliance. Builders can upgrade some areas (like windows) and downgrade others (like wall thickness). Even 2x4 walls can meet Step 4 with smart design.
Unlike PassiveHouse or LEED, Step Code is a BC-wide performance standard integrated into building bylaws. It brings consistency across municipalities.
This complements the Energy Step Code by focusing on reducing emissions as well as improving energy efficiency.
Most municipalities now require Step 3. Some require Step 4 or Step 5. Our advisors can help you check your area’s requirement and plan accordingly.
